The Benefits of Homeschool

Wondering What the Real Scoop is on the Benefits of Homeschool? Looking for the Pros and Cons? Homeschooling benefits can certainly be misleading if you have not done all your homework. By taking the time to look through the content below now, you will save yourself from unrealistic expectations later.

Successfully Capturing the Benefits of Homeschool Can Depend On Several Factors

Homeschooling benefits can certainly be misleading if you have not done all your homework. For instance I'm sure you've heard about the:

  1. National Spelling Bee,
  2. National Geography Bee, and the

  3. National Merit Scholarship winners

....and couldn't help but notice some of them, no LOTS of them, happen to be schooled at home. Why? Are the benefits of homeschool so great that every child goes on to win national competitions?

Of course not! That is silly - kids from all walks of life go on to win academic scholarships and contests because they work hard and prepare. So what does this have to do with homeschool benefits and the pros and cons of taking such a leap of faith?

Be Realistic In Your Expectations

Most homeschooled families have different opinions about what an education is supposed to be. What an education isn't, is the sum of pre-canned ideas over a period of more than a decade. Most homeschoolers believe that an education is the opportunity for kids to learn things from many different sources while being free to form an opinion that is not based on what Big Education has told them.

Here is how homeschool parents ensure that Small Education does its job:

They delve deep into the world of:

  1. Curriculum,

  2. Testing,

  3. Learning styles, and

  4. Individualized progress

They think up new challenges for their kids and themselves, and then they look for a way to make dreams become reality.

All that hard work, research, and preparation will almost always lead to success, even if you never spend a single day schooling your kids at home.

That said - let's not pretend that homeschoolers don't have an advantage, right? I mean, how can one kid who has all the time in the world to prepare for a competition or scholarship, plus a one on one learning environment NOT do better than his just-one-of-many-in-a-crowd public school counterparts?

Well the truth is, in this type of individualized setting, kids can't help but progress. NO, they will not all become winners of national competitions! And NO they will not all be geniuses! But they will, with the right preparation and long-term tenacity of their parents, live up to their inherent potential and learn to use the natural intelligence they've been given.

On the front page of The Simple Homeschool I made a pretty big claim about the benefits of homeschool - I claimed that homeschool could help ALL children, regardless of parental education, race, or socio-economic status. When you start to take a closer look at individualized learning you'll see that homeschool can absolutely be the "Great Equalizer" for low or middle class families that feel their children have been:

  1. Forgotten,

  2. Used as political pawns, and

  3. Left behind.

You'll also recognize that pace, along with the one on one attention, can have a lot to do with whether or not your child succeeds academically.
