Foreign Language Courses Will Add Value to Your Homeschool Program

If you do this homeschool stuff long enough, eventually you will begin to wonder which foreign language courses would be a good fit for your child. There are a lot of courses out there, so finding just the right one can be daunting at first, but let's go through each one individually and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses as well as your goals as a homeschool family.

First, why are you interested in having your kids learn a new language? Your answer will have a huge impact on which program will work best for you. Scan the following reasons below to see where you are:

  1. You are using a classical homeschool program and need to start Latin
  2. Your child is getting older and foreign language is a necessary elective
  3. You want your child to learn more about their heritage and culture
  4. You want your children to be bilingual for everyday interaction with multi-lingual people
  5. You want your little ones to take advantage of their natural ability to learn languages

Which one did you pick?

This is important because you will most likely want to take advantage of some of the free online foreign language programs if your children are very young, while saving the costly and all inclusive language programs for those who need it for high school credit.

No one wants, or can afford, to spend hundreds of dollars on the top notch programs if their main goals fit in with reasons 3-5.

Little ones and kids who live around a large population of bi-lingual speakers can pick up enormous amounts by learning words here and there and listening to those around them speak the language.

However, if you need a Latin program, your purpose is to have your child acquire more English language skills than foreign language skills, and you should check out Memoria Press. They are very affordable in my opinion, and they keep your eye on the prize; in this case, mastering grammar.

On the other hand, if your older child needs to obtain proficiency in a language, you will absolutely need a more expensive and inclusive program OR hire a tutor.

Luckily I spent the last year and a half mulling over foreign language programs and have compiled a list of each possible choice.

These foreign language courses and programs are divided into three categories:

  1. Free or low cost
  2. Latin
  3. Fluency
