Homeschool Art is Something We Take Seriously Here At Our School...

Little Moe is artsy-fartsy so he whizzed through two homeschool art programs last year, plus he found a site online that had step by step how-to-draw videos. He sure was a drawing fool for a while there.

I won't give out the site here for the free step by step stuff; you'll have to do a search, because it is a little too flashy to trust putting up a direct link.

One I will mention is GeeArt16.

It has 16 animated lessons that you do online and it was pretty nice. It really concentrates on the traditional elements of design.

There are several activities to go with each lesson and I think he really learned a lot. A self directed curriculum, so I didn't have to do any prep work or stand over him for help.

He finished those in like 3 months though so I had to get him something else.

I found Mark Kistler's Imagination Station, paid the membership and he was off and running. It teaches how to draw in 3-D and shows the use of shading and shadows to make things look real.

Atelier is another homeschool art program that looks good. I might still buy this next year - this year we just had too much going on to spend that much time on art. It is a complete visual arts program that has guided video (DVD) lessons that take a child through different projects from start to finish. It is a bit pricey.

One little sort-of art curriculum that I liked for his younger years was Draw-Write-Now! It combines simple step by step drawing with copy work and handwriting. I still think it is a very cool little idea and they have lots of levels. If you buy their little drawing book it makes a nice little portfolio when completed too.

Leave Homeschool Art and Go To Music

Update October 2009 - Big Moe (he's closing in on 5'6" now, so I guess he's not a Little Moe any more!) has been taking art and pottery lessons at a place called MonArt here in Colorado. He loves it. These are franchise establishments, so I guess they are all run a little different, but I have found it to be a great addition to our homeschool experience.
