Homeschool Grammar - A Necessary Evil?
I can't rave about any of the homeschool grammar programs we've used, but I can recommend a few that simply get the job done.
SuzyQ started off with The Rules of the Game because remember that I took that private school's curriculum list and bought everything they used for us.
We used that program for like three years, so it wasn't all that bad I guess. It was a total pain to grade though. I don't know if that is an issue that is beyond help...or not...it is grammar.
Then she used Analytical Grammar in 11th grade. Good Program. I guess. It's grammar. It's BIG - and thick - and lasts for a couple of years if I remember correctly.
Little Moe used Pathway Readers at first and then another hard to find Mennonite program called Climbing to Good English. That last one can be purchased at a Canadian store called the Joy Center of Learning - I order from them every year.
We actually STILL use Climbing to Good English - but grammar is well...grammar and we both hate it.
Schoolhouse Rocks is the best grammar stuff so far - but not really all encompassing is it...
I think when it comes to grammar you just gotta try stuff out and not set your expectations too high.
Maybe Evan-Moor might have some fun stuff...
Sorry for the sad truth....I got nothin'.
Update October 2009 - I purchased Easy Grammar Plus to use this year but...I also bought Pathway Readers
Working With Words because I love the vocabulary. Anyway - they have like a mini-grammar course going on inside the
vocabulary workbooks so I ditched the $45 Easy Grammar Plus for somethng we were familiar with (and that only set me
back like $8).
He does it quickly and there is just enough grammar to keep him up on things but not enough to bore us all to death.
I have found that as he gets older we have more and more new subjects to cover and so things like spelling and grammar that used to be
part of our CORE, really aren't anymore. We still do them once or twice a week, but science, math, history, and
Japanese take up most of our time.
