Homeschool History Curriculum Can Be Frustrating

Like science, homeschool history curriculum often times presents itself as a problem for a few reasons.

FIRST - Where the HECK do you start? Seriously - pick a time period and go with it, or what? It can be overwhelming to think that you have to teach your child the better part of 8,000 years of human history.

SECOND - Who the HECK has time to teach this complicated homeschool history curriculum? LOL now - but come back in 6 months and let me know exactly how many history days you managed to squeeze in...I'm betting less than one a week tops, more like two a month.

So here we are - where do I start and how to I find the time?

Once you figure it out - and don't worry I'm gonna spell it out for you - you'll LOVE history! It is SOOOOOO much fun and your kids will have a blast too. It is hard not to actually enjoy the history part - what drags you down is the planning and doing part.

So first off - where do you start? Why at the BEGINNING of course! I hope I don't offend people who do willy nilly history but there is no other logical way to tell a story than to start at the beginning. Even a pre-schooler knows you don't start on the last page.

Chronological history, in my opinion, is the ONLY way to go for several reasons beside the obvious. First it gives you a plan without ever planning! No need to write up complicated schedules because you start either in pre-history for secular people - or Egypt (sometimes Mesopotamia) for Christians.

A chronological homeschool history curriculum will typically start with Ancient Egypt. That is where we always started because while it might be sorta cool to learn pre-history to some people - my scientific background craves facts and that guessing game stuff drives me up a wall.

Kids LOVE Egypt - I mean seriously - who doesn't? Mummies, pyramids, and crazy Pharaohs, what more could you ask for in a good story?

So start at the beginning, and the beginning is a little arbitrary, use your best judgment as to which early period will work best for you.

Ok, next question - how do I find the time? Well if ever there was a subject that was crying out for comprehensive unit study courses, history is it! Unit study courses for history can break each time period up into logical blocks, will give the kids interesting stories and facts to keep them learning, and will provide just enough hands on stuff to keep them engaged while not creating a scheduling crisis for mom.

Simple Homeschool remember? History IS simple when done properly.
