Homeschool Testing is an Appropriate Way to Measure Progress and Get Ready for College
I bet many non-homeschoolers think we just sit around and watch Oprah all day - but not true. We take this stuff very seriously and so homeschool testing is something most of us do,
not only because many states require it, but because we really want to measure our children's progress.
There are several companies out there who test for homeschoolers, Bob Jones University Homeschool is one of them and Thurber's Educational Assessments is another.
I've used Thurber's for the CAT and been pleased with it.
BJU required a bachelor's degree or teaching certification for testing, so make sure to read the rule on that site should you go that route.
SAT testing can be done as soon as your child is eligible, usually in the 10th or 11th grade.
They can take the test more than once if they need to, but many don't.
The ACT is another test available and some kids will take both, and yet others, none. It is totally up to the kids and the parents. I bet you're wondering how that works, huh?
Well, as a non-traditional student (I went back to university when I was 30) I definitely took the road less traveled as far as college goes.
I never took the SATs or the ACTs when I was in high school. No one ever told me I had to, so why should I?
Instead, when it came time for me to go back to school I went to a community college, did a year of CORE subjects, got into the honor's society, and then took my good grades and transferred into the 4 year university of my choice.
Your homeschooler doesn't need to follow the beaten path either. If you have the time and resources to get him there, you can enroll your Moe in community college as soon as they turn 16.
Then have them take basic CORE subjects like
- Math
- Science
- English
- History
They could have an associate's degree before they turn 18.
By that time no college will care about those high school tests, your child has a degree.
Heck, you can even make this easier and have them take online classes at the community college and barely have to leave the house.
I'm gonna get more into that later when we discuss college entrance stuff, but if homeschool testing is your thing then try those two companies at the top of the page.
