There are several Free or Low Cost Online Foreign Language Courses Available

Online foreign language courses are gaining in popularity for adults and small children. Why the age gap you say? Well, the online courses require more discipline and effort than many of the larger pre-packaged language programs.

This extra effort is not such a big deal if you're doing it in YOUR free time or just gathering lessons for little ones, but if you have a middle or high school aged child, it can become very time-consuming.

The Praxis iPod program has been around a little while, since at least 2005 with the ChinesePod as far as I can tell, and started out with the novel idea that learning can take place using the latest technology.

Enter iPod foreign language! I haven't used the program and they are pretty cryptic about how much it costs, they really want you to take the FREE spin I guess, but hey, free spin is free spin. You can always say no thanks if it doesn't work.

In addition to the Chinese they offer SpanishPod, ItalianPod, and FrenchPod.

Personally, I think it would be great for a kid who is into technology. Plus, it is supposed to "Allow you to learn language on your own time", so the convenience thing plays big.

The next program is Transparent Language which is a very nice low cost, but professional, alternative.

Transparent Language runs deals all the time via coupons, so make sure you check that out if you end up ordering. They have 100's of languages covered (so says the website), so you have a lot of choices and I have heard this program tossed around a lot in the forums by homeschool moms as a cheaper, but comparable, alternative to Rosetta Stone.

Ask around though, I don't see that that is possible for fluency, but I haven't used it.

Transparent has programs especially for the younger kids too, so maybe that is why it is so highly rated on the forums? My personal opinion after comparing a bunch of programs is that TL is more of an intro course than a comprehensive fluency program.

Other free or low cost programs are Word2word and Mango Languages, but I haven't tried them out yet. They require far too much leg work for me, but the price tag of FREE makes that worthwhile for some.
