Saxon Math is STILL High On the List of Effective Homeschool Curriculums.
Saxon Math works. Period.
I mean I could leave the rest of the page blank and feel good about what I just wrote.
It has been around for a LONG time and has ushered many a homeschool child into college level calculus freshman year.
Saxon Math has step-by-step parent guides and several non-affiliate companies sell kits catering to the Saxon method.
Most notably these kits contain manipulatives which greatly help visual learners in the early years.
In addition, like Teaching Textbooks, Saxon Homeschool has a tutoring DVD program called Saxon Teacher,
plus there is also a non-affiliated company called Dive Into Math produces the DIVE CD's that correlate with the Saxon textbooks.
Another way in which you can have a "personal tutor" teach your child math for you.
We've used Saxon and I am impressed with its depth and with how well it prepared my Little Moe, and I've used the DIVE cd's for 4th grade.
In making comparison between the two computer programs, I prefer Teaching Textbooks.
It has a professionally polished look and it contains every solution to every problem worked out in a step by step manner (making it awesome for algebra and higher math)
The price of Saxon with the separate DIVE CD's is very comparable to the price of the Teaching Textbooks program. Without the CD's, it is about $50 cheaper.
Saxon is entirely do-able without the CD's so don't get me wrong, and it is solid.
While both Teaching Textbooks and Saxon are secular, the DIVE CD's have little Christian blurbs here and there throughout the program.
Mostly it says random stuff like "Be thankful that your parents love you enough to provide you with a quality education" or "Don't complain about doing work"...stuff like that. It didn't bother us at all.
One more thing about DIVE that I just noticed on their website - they have high school science CD's coming out in 2009 that correlate with popular programs like BJU Press and Apologia.
